Been looking for the post you had, mllersil, asking about prep for November NaNo and couldn't find it. Went to your profile to look for recent posts and, lol, see it is just above Lib's post that I just answered. (So, Lib, if you are reading this, look at my post above for a response to your post.) I do have trouble with this forum if you don't answer right away. You can't find the post again. Does anyone have an answer for that? I don't know how great my participation will be in November NaNo. I am taking a Javascript course and it ends in the beginning of December. It is kind of time consuming. Not to mention I don't know if I will be working or not. I also do not want to start something new - I want to continue with the book I worked on at camp. It is coming together. I don't think I will ever be able to write 50,000 words in one month. I just write too slowly. But I will be there! Be sad not to have a cabin, though. Let's hope this board gets a workout.

I'm mostly using the Proboards app for android. It's much easier to view all recent activities there, even if the thread has been going on for a few entries without looking. Boom, I envy you. You're so good at knowing your own abilities and limits and, even better, you are calm enough to act accordingly. That's something I've wanted to achieve for a long time now. And still haven't. And probably never will. If only some of your wisdom could trickle out of the screen and into my brains...

Lol. Well, thanks, but you certainly have been a font of good thoughts here. Furthermore, pretty sure I would not characterize anything I say as wisdom. It's more like "been there, done that". If I would write an autobiography, I would title it Making Mistakes. I know about that "Oooo, I've got a great new idea and no longer think this one is interesting" in the middle of a project because I always lose interest in a project when I get in to it. At work, you don't have a choice about following through (well, less of one) but with your own writing, nothing is going to stop you from wandering off. I have seen almost everyone on this forum suddenly discover something else MUCH BETTER when they are run in to difficulty with the current project. I also see in the NaNo forums people saying I wrote this novel in 2008 and this one in 2011 and this one in 2010 etc., but they never go back and finish those works.
I, too, have to remember that writing isn't just about getting that exciting idea and thinking about your characters, plots, worlds, etc. It is getting from point A to point B with others on board. That does clip your wings some and is not as much fun. I get annoyed with stories I read that I can tell the author didn't do the hard stuff, the boring stuff, of figuring out how and why something would happen. What would the characters really be thinking etc. even when it doesn't fit your preconceived vision of the story. They just wanted it to be that way so they wrote it that way. Sticks out like a sore thumb to me. That is one of the reasons I write slowly.
I'll be writing that splendid dialogue I imagined, then realize, "Ooo, she would have asked about this first or noticed this" etc, something that completely derails my lovely plan. But that is the challenge of good storytelling, I think. To find how incorporate the reality well. But that can be tedious. Hence, oh, I have a much better idea over here! Nope. it is going to be the same thing. I am sure you are experiencing that with M.

I always thought the hard part was getting the idea and bashing out some version of it, but editing and revisions are so much harder, as is staying true to the heart of the story and characters.

My plans took a huge leap forward yesterday when I accidentally found a picture of my main character on the Internet. Actually, it's someone who looks an awful lot like how I imagine my main character to look. I seem to write better if I have a picture to inspire me - a person, a landscape, something from the story - and so far I didn't have that. Now I do. I still wish I could draw well enough to sketch some portraits, but this will do fine. Ooh, I had this same thing happen. Well, not exactly. I had my story going well in my head, my world building was going gangbusters, and I certainly knew who my main character was. But I didn't FEEL her, you know? Then I ran across this picture, and "Hello Amanya!" (It's actually oscar-award winning actress lupita nyong'o from 12 years a slave). I suddenly feel like I KNOW my MC which is kind of important since I'm writing 3rd person Amanya POV.
