I did this for the 'My novel is x, plus y' forum and it helped me to come up with the comparable published fiction that we're supposed to know our book resembles.
My novel is Dragonriders of Pern plus Sleeping Beauty plus Crewel.
The dragons have been asleep for 100 years. A young girl must discover her powers to save not only the dragons from extinction, but the world from the loss of all magic.

Thinking about this I'd say my novel (not my current short stories though) would be like Mo Hayder and Aaronovitch meeting in Murakamis living room. And Swoboda would peek occasionally inside through the window.

I've read the Dragonriders of Pern and Sleeping Beauty but don't know Crewel. Crewel is a new YA Science Fiction where a girl has the abilities of one of the three oracle crones who control people's destiny by manipulating their life threads on the tapestry... uggg my brain isn't working. 'weaver' is what comes to mind. Greek mythology.

Oh sorry. Here are some wiki links: Haruki Murakami is a Japanese writer, a real prodigy with a very distinct style. --> Wiki pageAnd Mo Hayder is a British author known for her blood curling thriller skills, best piece of work was "The Devil of Nanking" or "Tokyo" as it's called here in Europe --> Wiki pageBen Aaronovitch. ( Wiki page) What can I say? He is a master of British dry sense of humor, originally a screen writer for Doctor Who. At the moment he writes supernatural detective stories. And he is one of those authors, making you read all night long and then making you cry when you finished the book, just because you want more. And Swoboda ... is just Helmut Swoboda, I'm afraid. He wrote one book only in 1967, a grandiose thesis about artificial humans, ranging from golems to robots. As far as I know, it's available in German only ( here, for example). His style of deduction as well as his approach to his topics are unique, I really love his work. I haven't read "Crewel" yet, but it sounds promising. (For some peculiar reason it's available here under the title "Die Lichtfängerin" = the light catcher.) But I know the Dragonriders of Pern - awesome world building! And as a German, of course I know Sleeping Beauty. That mixture really sounds attractive. Keep it up - I want to read it sometime!

Oh. I have fond memories of Pippi. Definitely a quirky self-assured character.

My next children's book is "The Vikings Were Back," is a tale of the Junction City Scandinavian Festival. It seems to me it would be one of those books that people would put on their coffee table. Do people still do that? This book is up on Goodreads if you want to check it out!

I have plenty of books on my coffee table. And magazines, and old letters, and about twenty pounds of other stuff I could toss but never get around to.

A future book that I have coming out is based on "The Ugly Duckling". "The Ugly Horse" is the life of a Swedish Dala Horse.
